Short Stories

Not Black but Red

Prompt from “Complete the Story” published by Piccadilly (USA) Inc.

“At first, we thought the black liquid was oil, that we’d struck it rich and we’d be able to retire and live in leisure. We actually started writing down all the ways we’d spend the money. Our first choice was”

to pay our parent’s mortgage before paying our own.

And then the sun appeared from behind the clouds, a beam of light hitting the liquid, and we realized our mistake. The liquid wasn’t black. It was a deep, dark red that looked suspiciously like –

“Blood,” Carl whispered. “It looks like blood.”

They stepped back from the hole and Charlie shook his head. They were idiots to even think it could be oil since all they were doing was digging a well for a farmhouse. The hole wasn’t nearly deep enough for them to have struck oil.

Charlie was still questioning their idiocy when the word “blood” finally fully registered. If it was blood and that much…wells something had to be very, very wrong. “Maybe…maybe we shouldn’t be digging here.”

The brothers shared a look. What had seemed like such a lucky break was suddenly just the opposite.

The clouds covered the sun again.
