Dreaming?

Writing Prompt from Complete the Story published by Piccadilly USA Inc.

“Perhaps it was a dream, she thought. Perhaps if she pinched herself, she would wake up. But she didn’t want to wake up. She wanted to stay in this dream world where…”

her family was still alive and well. Where she hadn’t been forced to light the fire that had killed her parents and her two darling little brothers.

She smiled as her siblings ran around the table. Any other time it would have annoyed her but not now, not after four months without him.

“Hey Lena, good luck on your rehearsal tonight!” her mom trilled as she brought the pancakes to the table.

Lena’s heart pounded. If it was the day of the rehearsal then the attack was that night. Maybe this was real. Maybe this was her chance to change it.

“I’m actually not feeling well,” Lena said as she faked a cough. “I don’t think I can go.”

Her dad just laughed. “That’s just your nerves talking. I’ll meet you after school and take you to the rec center.”

Lena smiled weakly. She’d have to change something but she had the sinking suspicion that she wouldn’t be able to.
